X-Men First Class lived up to its name at the box office this weekend, raking in an estimated 56 million dollars and just beating out the first X-Men, which opened at 54.5 million in 2000 (adjusted to 79 million in today’s “movie market”).
But the #1 ranking was bittersweet, as the film didn’t do as well as previous movies in the series. In addition to being over 20 million behind the first X-Men, the 160 million dollar film grossed considerably less than another in its series, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which grossed 85.1 million in its first weekend.
This puts X-Men First class on par with The Incredible Hulk (2008) and roughly 10 million dollars behind the recent adaptation of the Thor character, although it had similar attendance numbers and received a boost from the 3d ticket price.
